Frederiks kirke (marmorkirken) lay unfinished for more than 100 years, after work stopped on it in 1770. The experts at bruun rasmussen were not sure about the 1891 date, maybe because the church was completed in 1894, and in 1891 it looked nothing like the painting. But langer did not have to go to the building site in 1891, he could just go to the royal art museum in copenhagen (now: statens museum for kunst) to watch thorald læssøe's 1838 painting of the ruins and copy that. And that is most probably what he did. The date could perhaps also be read as 1881, which would coincide with his time as a student at the royal danish academy. See "other versions". Object Type: painting. Date: circa 1891. Dimensions: height: 33 cm (12.9 in); width: 41 cm (16.1 in). Medium: oil on panel. Collection: Unknown. Viggo Langer - Den ufuldendte Marmorkirke
