The fate of the central composition is unknown. Sellaio's art was greatly influenced by sandro botticelli, from whom jacopo learned the expressiveness of line. The work of this artist is not distinguished by its diversity; he often repeats the figures and faces of characters with their expression of lyrical melancholy. In this case, the grief for the departed is emphasized by the gestures. In the florentine church of san frediano there is a large altarpiece by sellaio, the lamentation of christ with the saint, in which (with minor changes) mary and john are close to the madonna and the apostle on the hermitage panels.
