two common women are chatting heatedly at a market stall. Both are represented with fish heads instead of their human faces. The most imposing, mouth open, leans with authority towards the smallest. She holds a fish in her hand, while the other carries a basket. Extract from métamorphoses du jour (editions gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "have you ever happened to make an excursion to the surroundings of the market, and enter the crowded ranks of the literary deities of the place? [. . . ] -hey, my little one, you're very proud today! excuse me! not fresh, the fish! you see that! well, always take it, and tell your mistress that the fee is overpriced!”
