Frances, Countess of Surrey, by Hans Holbein the Younger, circa 1535

Frances, Countess of Surrey, by Hans Holbein the Younger, circa 1535

Portrait of frances, countess of surrey. Black and coloured chalks, pen and indian ink, white bodycolour, on pink-primed paper, 31. 5 × 21. 3 cm, royal collection, windsor castle. The black fall of the headdress may be reworked, and the projection on the left and some of the contours of the sleeve and corsage appear to have been mechanically transferred by indentation (parker, p. 41). Frances de vere (c. 1516–77) was the daughter of john de vere, 15th earl of oxford. In 1522, she married henry howard, earl of surrey, whom holbein drew twice, once in a similar frontal pose. Date: circa 1535.
