Wood engraving illustration for chapter 3 of "son christopher" in once a week magazine, volume 9, page 519. The novella is set in 1685. In this scene, constables search the house of a puritan family looking for evidence of opposition to the catholic king. A child is trying to ignore the harassment by immersing herself in a book (it is pilgrim's progress); the woman on the right, a visitor who is not a puritan, tells the constables not to read her letters (she expects to be heeded because her brother is sheriff). Date: 31 October 1863.
