Cartoon for heavy artillery (no 2274) image: a preparatory drawing on canvas for gill's large painting 'heavy artillery', depicting a busy scene of british soldiers in an artillery position. A gun crew move shells to a 9. 2 heavy howitzer on the left, another man sitting stitching his tunic in the middle foreground of the composition. To the right sit some exhausted infantrymen, one holding a mug. Immediately behind them are other men and the bottom section of a large crucifix. There are sheets of corrugated iron amongst them, with bomb damage and another howitzer visible in the background. Date: 1919 (First World War).
