The man looks at his partner while she lowers her eyes. The man holds in his hands what could be a measuring standard for shoes. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate the human comedy. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the morals of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "yesterday, when you left us alone, madame schontz and me, i wanted to blow you off; but she said to me: 'my prince, you are not more handsome, but you are older than rochefide; you would beat me, and he is like a father to me, find here a quarter of a good reason to change?. I don't have the crazy passion for arthur that i had for the little fellows in patent leather boots, and whose debts i paid, but i love him like a woman loves her husband when she is an honest woman. "and she kicked me out. " [excerpt from béatrix, by honoré de balzac] themes / subjects / places represented: subject of society, morals, grisette, boot mode of acquisition: purchase institution: maison de balzac inventory number: bal 98-84.
