iconographic description:
an allegory of time - a winged, naked and bearded old man - is represented seated. Around this character are placed plates and dishes containing strange dishes. These are miniatures: church, ship, soldiers, carriages, village. Time has grabbed a plate of tiny animals and is going to voraciously devour a miniature elephant. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists on numerous subjects. Themes / subjects / places represented:
allegorical scene, allegory of time, meal
institution: maison de balzac
