It is an oil sketch for the painting "the oath of john casimir" (1893), painted four years later. In the centre of the composition, we can see king john ii casimir of poland kneeling in front of the picture of our lady and making vows to extend the civil rights of the nobility and improve the living conditions of peasants. In front of the king, there is the figure of bishop tarnowski reading the vow. Beside him, the queen is kneeling, and the royal suite is at the back. The painting is coloured in warm shades of brown and ochre. Matejko painted it as a sketch in light brush strokes. (marta kłak-ambrożkiewicz). Date: 1889. Medium: oil on panel.
