Study of hms 'shakespeare' from astern, alongside a quay
this is a stern view of a destroyer flotilla leader of the shakespeare class, said to be the shakespeare herself. The class was built by john i thornycroft & co at woolston and the shakespeare was launched 7 july 1917 and completed 10 october 1917. This drawing shows the ship in the period 1917-1919; by 1920 the lower yard on the foremast had been removed and she was wearing flotilla bands on her after funnel. The ship ahead is an m or r class destroyer. The sketch at the bottom looks like the hull of a flying boat of the porte baby type, serialled 9800-9821 but only 11 of these boats (9800 - 9810) were erected and flown between january 1916 and april 1917. They were all deleted by december 1918. Date: 1917. Dimensions: 354 mm x 253 mm. Collection: Fine art.
