Raising of Jairus' Daughter, Ilya Repin, 1871

Raising of Jairus' Daughter, Ilya Repin, 1871

On february 13, 1871, five graduates of the academy of arts were given one common theme: "the resurrection of jairus's daughter". According to academic rules, each of them, unaware of what the other was doing, had to make a sketch. On the same day, these works were approved and confirmed by the council of the academy. Subsequently, repin made seven more sketches of this theme, which have survived to this day in various museums and private collections. One of them depicts a girl painted from vera shevtsova, as if immersed in a deep sleep. Instead of the miracle of resurrection, repin sounded the theme of grief. According to repin, he was impressed by the memories of the death of his twelve-year-old sister ustya, which made him take a new look at the whole scene. Here is a living life drama, not only of the terrible grief he experienced, but also of the ambiguous meaning of the gospel narrative, based on overcoming death and the revival of life, at least on the canvas of the painting. Light and color harmonies fill the painting with an almost musical sound – while working on the painting, ilya asked his brother vasily to play one of beethoven's sonatas. Grief and enlightenment, tragedy and hope form the basis of the diploma work. All five graduates received gold medals for their works and the right to be boarders in europe. Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: 1871. Dimensions: height: 229 cm (90.1 in); width: 382 cm (12.5 ft). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Russian Museum. Ilja Jefimowitsch Repin 013
