In the foreground: the granite embankment of the neva river (1763-1780) at the old hermitage. In the background: the spit of vasilyevsky island, the stockexchange (1805-1810), and the two rostral columns (1805-1810) by architect thomas de tomon. Theembankment was constructed between 1804 and thesecond decade of the 19th century. Blueprints for the uncompleted section of the spit were used when creating the composition.
