iconographic description:
composition in two sketches. On the left: a couple seen from behind is walking, they are both very elegant. On the right side, a very portly soldier dressed in full uniform, with a furry cap on his head, stands with his legs spread ridiculously apart. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "the world was his! already his tailor had been summoned, probed, conquered. Seeing monsieur de trailles, rastignac had understood the influence that tailors exert on the lives of young people. Alas! there is no average between these two terms: a tailor is either a mortal enemy, or a friend given by the tailor. Eugène met in his house a man who had understood the paternity of his business, and who considered himself a link between the present and the future of young people. So rastignac, grateful, made this man's fortune with one of these words in which he later excelled - "i know him, he said, two pants which led to marriages worth twenty thousand pounds. " [extract from le père goriot, by honoré de balzac]
