A smalschip close-hauled and a dutch flagship under easy sail
on the left of this compositional drawing is a dutch transport vessel (a smalschip) close-hauled on the starboard tack, behind which is a larger ship at anchor. Pulling towards the smalschip, in the foreground, is a smaller rowing boat with several people on board. On the right of the page the artist has included a bow view of a larger ship with flag at the fore and pendant at the main. Other ships and smaller vessels populate the distance. A collector’s stamp in the lower right corner indicates that this drawing once belonged to the influential artist-collector prosper henry lankrink (1628-92).
