Descent from the Cross, poss. by Johann Apakass (Macedonia, 18 c., Pushkin museum)

Descent from the cross. Macedonia. Pushkin state museum of fine arts, moscow. No information on restoration. Solid board, relief, rounded reliquary. Loss of wood, gesso and paint layer. Counts. Nimbus is ciphered. Inscription: "descent from the cross". Size: 32 x 24 cm. Late icon of the primitive style. The abundance of profile images, grotesque poses of figures, bright colors are far from the tradition of medieval art. This is consistent with the plant ornament on the throne of the mother of god. The icon was undoubtedly created in an environment where muslim influences were strong, which is reflected in the popular landscape against the background with the image of minarets and mosques, as well as the treatment of high-cheekboned faces. The reliquary is surrounded by a red field. The icon comes from macedonia or bulgaria. Ж-2865. Date: 18th century.
