The name of the author is given as the london county council, the principal local government body for the county of london throughout its existence from 1889 to 1965. The individual authors/artists are not named in the book. Volumes i-iii include a forward by sir laurence gomme, clerk to london county council, who died in 1915. Volume iv includes a forward by sir james bird, clerk to london county council who died in 1925. Volume vi includes a forward by george gater, clerk to london county council who died in 1963.
