Composition in half-tones composition en demi-valeurs oil on canvas50 x 50 cmmonogrammed and dated on the lower left edge of the picture: th. Vd / 1928.;on the back in stencil writing on the stretcher: "theo van doesburg / composition / en demi valeurs"; signed and dated with a brush on the canvas: theo v. Doesburg / 1928 [underlined] pariskunstmuseum basel, donation hans arp 1966inv. G 1966. 10 two draft drawings in the kröller-müller museum in otterlo and one in the centraal museum in utrecht, as well as two photographs of the work in its unfinished state illustrate the development of this painting (cf. Illustration in hoek 2000, pp. 497–498). One of these drafts is signed "xxiii / comp. Avec dégrad. " (hoek 2000, p. 498, cat. 823a), which leads hoek to assume that van doesburg originally called the basel work "composition xxiii avec dégradation", as it is also called in several earlier publications (including exhibition cat. Nuremberg/basel 1969, polano 1979). According to hoek 2000, p. 497, "dégradation" refers to the gradual reduction of colour in the colour areas at the bottom left and top right, as can still be seen in the draft drawings and in photographs of earlier states of the painting, whereas here the colour areas are evenly distributed.
