on the left of the image: a man of strong build, elegantly dressed. On the right of the image, two young women dressed identically flank a matron. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "félicité's tenderness for calyste had prepared the most beautiful future for this poor child. Allied with the grandlieu family, where there were two charming girls to marry, the two most ravishing flowers of the faubourg saint-germain, she had written to the duchess of grandlieu the story of calyste, announcing to her that she sold her house on the rue du mont-blanc, for which some speculators offered two million five hundred thousand francs. Her businessman had just replaced this home with one of the most beautiful hotels on the rue de grenelle, purchased for seven hundred thousand francs. From the rest of the price of her house on the rue du mont-blanc, she devoted a million to the purchase of the land of the guénic house, and disposed of all her fortune in favor of that of the two young ladies of grandlieu. Would cure calyste of his passion for madame de rochegude. " [excerpt from béatrix, by honoré de balzac]
