In a gold-plated copper frame, on the reverse a gold-plated copper plate with an engraved inscription "isabella / dss of manchester / daughter of john / duke of montagu". Lady isabella montagu (around 1705 - 1786) was one of the daughters of the 2nd duke of montagu and his wife lady mary churchill. In 1723 she married william montagu, the 2nd duke of manchester (1700 - 1739), and four years after his death the politician edward hussey; however, she preferred to retain her former rank and desperately sought a title for her second husband. As both the daughter and widow of a duke, with considerable wealth, the new husband was to appear to be her equal. Her wish was not fulfilled until 1762, when edward hussey baron beaulieu. After another two decades of waiting, in 1782, he finally rose to the rank of earl beaulieu. - provenance: probably owned by the dukes of manchester, kimbolton castle.
