His fiancée rodogune (mlle duchesnois), prevents him from putting his lips to it by pointing at the poisoner. The other characters present are, on the left, oronte (barbier), ambassador of the king of parthia; behind demetrius, timagène (desprez), his governor; supporting cleopatra, laonice (mlle thénard the younger), his confidante.
