historical commentary:
the oldest (private) market in paris, created in 1615, the marché des enfants-rouges, took the name of the hospital located at 90 rue des archives, following its closure in 1772. Sold to the city of paris in 1912, it is still in operation today. This watercolor was reproduced on a brochure entitled "monograph of the marché des enfants rouges. Series of studies - water paintings (cf. Album g. Cain "coins de paris", library of the carnavalet museum, t. Iii, document integrated between pages 80 and 81).
