War clouds
this pen and ink and grey wash drawing is typical of the drawings that wyllie produced for reproduction in the early 1900s. It is probably a comment on the japanese attack on the russian fleet at port arthur in february 1904 at the beginning of the russo-japanese war. The russian bear, orientated to the east, is confronted by the japanese samurai who faces west. This drawing is one of a number of black and white drawings of naval actions of the war, which wyllie probably made for publication in the 'illustrated london news'. War clouds. Date: early 1900s. Dimensions: Sheet: 380 x 557 mm. Collection: Fine art.
