War Clouds RMG PW1703, William Lionel Wyllie, early 1900s

War clouds this pen and ink and grey wash drawing is typical of the drawings that wyllie produced for reproduction in the early 1900s. It is probably a comment on the japanese attack on the russian fleet at port arthur in february 1904 at the beginning of the russo-japanese war. The russian bear, orientated to the east, is confronted by the japanese samurai who faces west. This drawing is one of a number of black and white drawings of naval actions of the war, which wyllie probably made for publication in the 'illustrated london news'. War clouds. Date: early 1900s. Dimensions: Sheet: 380 x 557 mm. Collection: Fine art.
