From left to right: guido cavalcanti (who recites aloud the poems of guido guinizzelli, who was already dead at that time), dante (the pomegranate he holds in his hand is in art a symbol of immortality), giotto (while he paints the famous portrait of dante frescoed in the podestà chapel, in the bargello palace) and cimabue (giotto's teacher). Rossetti wrote in a letter dated 1 january 1853: «in this way i have represented all the most influential dimensions of dante's youth - art, friendship and love - with a real story that incorporates them all. I believe that the combination is the best i have ever managed to illustrate this moment in the poet's life, and the drawing is certainly among the most beautiful i have ever made. " (see mazzara).
