Giotto Painting the Portrait of Dante, Giotto, 1852

Giotto Painting the Portrait of Dante, Giotto, 1852

From left to right: guido cavalcanti (who recites aloud the poems of guido guinizzelli, who was already dead at that time), dante (the pomegranate he holds in his hand is in art a symbol of immortality), giotto (while he paints the famous portrait of dante frescoed in the podestà chapel, in the bargello palace) and cimabue (giotto's teacher). Beatrice is present under the scaffolding among the women in procession towards the church. Rossetti wrote in a letter dated 1 january 1853: «in this way i have represented all the most influential dimensions of dante's youth - art, friendship and love - with a real story that incorporates them all. I believe that the combination is the best i have ever managed to illustrate this moment in the poet's life, and the drawing is certainly among the most beautiful i have ever made. " (see mazzara). Object Type: painting. Date: 1852. Dimensions: height: 36.8 cm (14.4 in); width: 47 cm (18.5 in). Medium: watercolor over pencil. Collection: Private collection.
