In 1689, stadholder william iii had forced jacob ii stuart from the english throne. Jacob ii fled to safety to louis xiv of france, while william iii took his place on the english throne. Jacob tried to recover his throne in england in 1690 using a military expedition via ireland. This was frustrated by william iii who succeeded in conquering a combined french/irish army in the battle at the river boyne on 11 july 1690.
