The Hireling Shepherd, woodcut by Hans Holbein the Younger, Published London 1548

The hireling shepherd, title page to urbanus regius, a lytle treatise after the maner of an epistyle. Woodcut, 4. 2 × 5. 8 cm, bodleian library, oxford university. One of a group of prints relating to the dissolution of the monasteries during the english reformation. Figures in the pictures are depicted as monks, in less than flattering situations. The woodcuts were produced at a time when reformers satirised monks mercilessly. Date: Published London 1548.
