Eberstein coat of arms design for a stained glass window for christoph von eberstein. Pen and ink and brush, grey, green, and red washes, over preliminary drawing in black crayon, 29. 1 × 33. 2 cm, ashmolean museum, oxford. The drawing depicts a landsknecht, a german mercenary pikeman, wearing the peacock feather and saltire crosses of the habsburgs. On the right is the crest of christoph von eberstein, and in the background a landscape. These elements are set within an arch on which two soldiers—the one on the left imperial, the one on the right a swiss confederate—engage lances with each other. Count christoph von eberstein (1502–27) was a renowned landsknecht commander. In april 1522, the landsknechts inflicted a heavy defeat on the swiss confederates at the battle of bicocca (müller, 276). Object Type: drawing. Date: 1522.
