Decazes - Galerie contemporaine, before 1860

Photographic portrait of duke decazes. Photographer goupil [et] c° - cliché nadar. This portrait was published in the illustrated magazine contemporary, literary, artistic gallery which was part of a series published by goupil & cie. Published between 1876 and 1884, the series includes 241 portraits of personalities in the fields of visual art, literature, music, science and politics. The portraits, by parisian photographers, were printed by photoglypty, an opto-mechanical process which released the light parts from the dark parts, thanks to a gradation of continuous tones. Its speed and low price, as well as the longevity of reproductions (competing processes produced copies whose contrast diminished over time), made it a popular process for printing in large quantities. Date: before 1860.
