historical commentary:
this bust is based on the "monument to victor hugo" on which auguste rodin worked between 1893 and 1897 and which has undergone several studies and variations. Hugo is represented naked, draped, half reclining, surrounded in the final version (after 1900) by allegories of the tragic muse and meditation. Rodin had the idea of making a large bust based on this figure. It was at the universal exhibition in dresden in 1897 that he presented a plaster cast where the poet's bust was cut off at the shoulders, raised vertically with his head leaning on his chest. This print was commissioned in 1900 by paul meurice for the opening of the museum in 1903. It was delivered after his death in 1908. Person / character depicted:
