Das neue Zeughaus in Hannover Wilhelm Kretschmer Louis Thümling G. G. Lange 1850, Gustav Georg Lange

"the new armory in hanover" on waterlooplatz. The spelling of the draftsman "w. Kretschmar" is incorrect; it was actually the hanoverian drawing teacher johann heinrich wilhelm kretschmer, who was born in calenberger neustadt. The royal main armory (later the artillery depot) in front of the still existing former guard grenadier barracks was the largest military building on the site. Plans had been in place since 1833, karl friedrich schinkel prepared a report on it and rudolf wiegmann drafted a design. Konrad stremme won the competition announced by the war ministry in 1835 (ludwig hellner took second place). Construction was completed by 1849, as the revolution of 1848 caused a delay. The four-wing complex was designed in the "florentine renaissance" style with projecting corner buildings. The building survived the air raids on hanover in the second world war as a well-preserved war ruin. However, it was demolished in 1955 to make way for new buildings for the regional finance department. On the steel engraving, on the far left, you can see the "new gate" (previously also called "holtz gate"), which has been moved southwards in the "schützenhausallee" (now waterloostrasse), which was extended in 1826. In 1833, the architect and university professor ernst ebeling (*29. 10. 1804 in hanover, died 12. 09. 1851 in the same place; conrad wilhelm hase's trainer, among others) built a monumental complex there with 4 sandstone pillars (2 of which can be seen on the far left in the picture) and 2 guardhouses. The 4 gate pillars were only removed in 1961 and re-erected in front of schlossstrasse at the leineschloss at the level of the former leintor. In the enlarged view, you can see rows of soldiers exercising in front of the waterloo column, behind them the gables of small houses in ohe and linden. As part of "hannover city 2020 +", a large-scale redevelopment project by the city of hanover with citizen participation for large parts of the city center, this square (and the "friederikenplatz" to the left of it) are also to be redesigned. Numerous architects' offices have already submitted sketches for this. The exhibition of these interim results in the new town hall ended on march 26, 2010. The urban development and landscape planning ideas competition is to be completed by summer 2010. Date: 1858 (date of the book "Das Königreich Hannover...") and before; After Wilhelm Kretschmer;  (1806–1897).
