THE COMMITTEE OF CONFEDENCE, David Hess, 1796

THE COMMITTEE OF CONFEDENCE, David Hess, 1796

Seven men, closely grouped, fight and scuffle confusedly. On the ground (left) are the arrows of the seven united provinces, broken and separated, a cat plays with the ribbon which binds them (the symbolical bond of union, cf. Bmsat 5712). A national guard has taken one of the arrows and drives it into the head of a man whose eye he tries to gouge out, and who grasps another antagonist by the wig. One raises a chair to smite, another empties a wine-bottle on an opponent. 1796 etching printed in red. Date: 1796. Dimensions: Height: 255 mm; Width: 210 mm. Medium: paper. Collection: British Museum. HET COMMITTE' VAN BONDGENOOTSCHAP (Confederation) (BM 1851,0901.1327)
