still life presenting a pile of various objects: woman's hat, tricorn, broom, easel, hat box, turned canvas, knife, deck of cards, convict chains, top hat, chair, clogs, mask. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "for the understanding of this truly heroic word: we will prick up together! we must admit that schmucke was crassly ignorant in bric-à-braquologie. It took all the power of his friendship for him not to break anything in the living room and in the cabinet abandoned in pons to serve as his museum. Schmucke, belonging entirely to music, a composer for himself, looked at all the little stupidities of his friend, like a fish, which had received an invitation ticket, would look at a flower exhibition in luxembourg.
