iconographic description:
the scene takes place in a grocery store. On the right, the decor of the shop is carefully drawn: cabinet with drawers containing spices, jars, table with scales, barrels of coffee, cones of salt. In the center of the image stands the grocer grinding something in a large mortar, he is dressed in an apron and has a goose's head. In front of him, a servant with the head of a donkey comes to ask him a question. At his side, a puppy-faced child has his hands in his pockets. Extract from métamorphoses du jour (published by gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): for twenty years, everyone has taken pleasure in making fun of grocers; [. . . ]the caricature of this period is entirely in grandville's opinion: she spent her time, her mischief and her pencil lending the grocer all kinds of grotesque nonsense and ridiculous buffoons". subject of society, morals, donkey, boutique = store, barrel, scales, grocery store, servant - servant
